If you meet the eligibility criteria, there are two ways to apply for the NDIS:
The NDIS provides services to individuals aged 0 to 65 years.
Individuals with disabilities who are already receiving NDIS support when they turn 65 can choose to continue receiving funding through the NDIS or transition to the aged care system.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports a wide range of disabilities, including physical, psychosocial, and mental health conditions, and goes beyond the limitations of past programs. While lists like List A and List B outline supported disabilities, the NDIS is flexible and focuses on addressing barriers that prevent full societal participation, such as a lack of accessibility aids.
Rather than strictly categorising disabilities, the NDIS takes a broader view, considering impairments and their disabling effects on individuals. People with Disability Australia (PWDA) advocates for this inclusive approach, encouraging the NDIS to focus on the support needed rather than rigid definitions.
The NDIS often categorises disabilities as primary or secondary, but some individuals may find this distinction unhelpful if their secondary impairments are more impactful. Applicants must generally demonstrate a chronic, permanent, and severe impairment, but the scheme also accommodates psychosocial disabilities through a specialised stream that acknowledges unique recovery goals.
Applications may include evidence of existing services, such as group housing, to justify support. PWDA advises applicants to focus on identifying the help they need to live a full and equal life. For assistance, you can contact PWDA’s Information, Intake, and Referral Service at 1800 422 015.
The NDIS funds supports deemed reasonable and necessary to help participants fully engage in life. These supports can include education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements, health and wellbeing, and even sex services.
To qualify as reasonable and necessary, supports must:
